Cruise Dress Codes Compared: From Cunard to Virgin

Cruise lines describe their dress codes in marketing language that hides how different they really are. Put them on a spectrum — from Cunard's gala evenings to Virgin's no-code-at-all — and packing decisions get much easier. This is the same per-line rule set the CruiseOutfits planner uses.
The traditionalists: Cunard, Holland America, Princess
Cunard remains the most formal fleet afloat: Gala Evenings mean tuxedos and gowns are genuinely common, and jackets are expected in main restaurants after 6pm. Holland America and Princess keep classic formal nights ('Dressy' and 'Formal' respectively) where a suit or cocktail dress is the comfortable norm, though full black tie is optional.
The mainstream middle: Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, Costa
These lines keep scheduled formal nights but enforce them loosely. Royal Caribbean's 'Formal', Carnival's 'Cruise Elegant', and MSC's Gala nights all land in the same practical zone: dress trousers and a collared shirt or a cocktail dress puts you comfortably in the middle of the room. Shorts and swimwear are the only hard exclusions from main dining rooms at dinner.
The rebranded-casual camp: Celebrity, Norwegian, Disney
Celebrity replaced formal night with 'Evening Chic' — think polished rather than penguin: dark jeans with a blazer qualify. Norwegian's 'Dress Up or Not' night makes formality explicitly optional. Disney runs themed and semi-formal nights where participation is enthusiastic but never required, and family practicality wins.
The no-code lines: Virgin Voyages, and expedition ships
Virgin Voyages has no dress code at all — 'wear what makes you feel like you' is the official line, and the fleet dresses like a stylish city hotel. Expedition lines (and much of Viking's ethos) run 'elegant casual' every night with no formal events, because the itinerary is the show.
What this means for your suitcase
The line you sail changes your packing list more than the destination does. One formal outfit covers the mainstream middle; two matter on traditionalist lines; none at all on Virgin.
