Cunard Gala Evenings: What to Wear (and Whether to Rent the Tux)
6 min read · Updated October 5, 2026
Cunard is the one mainstream cruise line where formal night is not a suggestion. Where Carnival, Celebrity, and Norwegian have softened the language, Cunard still schedules Gala Evenings, expects people to dress for them, and treats the dress code as part of the experience rather than a footnote. That's a pleasure if you enjoy dressing up and a surprise if you booked a transatlantic crossing expecting the usual cruise-ship flexibility. Here's what to bring.
What a Gala Evening actually asks for
The planner's rule for Cunard formal night is a full-length gown or a tuxedo, strictly enforced, and that is the right mental model: on a Gala Evening, the main dining rooms and the public rooms after dinner are dressed in true black tie. Men wear a tuxedo or dinner jacket with a bow tie; many women wear floor-length gowns, with elegant formal separates and dressy evening dresses also common.
A well-cut dark suit with a tie is widely worn and generally accepted, especially by first-timers and on shorter sailings, but it puts you at the casual end of the room. If you're deciding what to commit to, the tuxedo is the choice that never feels wrong, and a dark suit is the choice that never feels like a costume. Either is a reasonable decision as long as you've made it before you pack.
Buy, wear a suit, or rent
If you'll sail Cunard more than once, or you have formal events at home, a tuxedo is the better purchase. If this is a one-time crossing, don't overlook the ship's own formalwear rental: many Cunard ships offer tuxedo rental at sea, which saves you carrying a bulky garment bag through two airports. Check the current rental terms and sizing process with Cunard before you rely on it, and book early, because sizes and styles go first on popular sailings.
For women, the equivalent trade-off is a gown versus an elegant cocktail dress. A floor-length dress in a travel-friendly fabric (jersey, crepe, or a matte satin that doesn't hold creases) is the practical sweet spot, because a stiff taffeta gown will arrive looking like it lost a fight with the suitcase.
The nights in between
Not every evening is a Gala. Cunard's other nights are a step down, not a free-for-all: think of it as smart evening wear rather than cruise casual. For the planner, sea days follow an Elegant Casual standard (collared shirts, polished casual) and port days run Smart Casual, with no athletic wear in the dining rooms. Jackets are expected for men in the main restaurants in the evening, and dresses, skirts, or smart trousers with a nice top suit women.
A few things that work on almost every other cruise line fall flat here: shorts at dinner, swim cover-ups outside the pool deck, and sneakers with athletic wear into a restaurant. The pool and the casual buffet-style venues keep the relaxed rules, so you can still dress down by choosing where to eat, but the main dining rooms are where the code lives.
- Gala Evening: tuxedo or dark suit; gown or formal evening dress
- Other evenings: jacket for men, smart dress or separates for women
- Daytime: Elegant Casual on sea days, Smart Casual in port
- Specialty dining and casual venues: follow the same polished baseline in the evening, so confirm the night's code in the daily programme
Packing it without wrecking it
Formalwear is the hardest part of a Cunard packing list because it's bulky and wrinkles easily. A hanging garment bag in your cabin wardrobe is the best approach if you're checking luggage, and a well-folded suit in a regular case can work if you ask the ship's laundry or pressing service to press it on arrival. Pack formal shoes in shoe bags and wear your bulkiest pair on the plane.
Because the Gala schedule is posted in the daily programme and usually mentioned before sailing, you can plan how many formal outfits to bring. One outfit worn with different accessories (a different tie, a wrap, or different jewelry) covers two Gala nights comfortably. Bring a second formal outfit only if the itinerary has several Gala Evenings or you'd rather not repeat.
Is it worth it?
For many people, the dress code is why they choose Cunard: the sense of occasion on a Gala Evening, with a ship full of people dressed up together, is something most other lines have deliberately moved away from. If that sounds like a hassle rather than a highlight, a more relaxed line may suit you better, and the planner can show how your packing list changes between lines.
If Cunard is the plan, enter your sailing length in the planner and it will work out how many formal and Elegant Casual outfits your trip needs, so you pack for the dress code you'll actually face.
